Lean
The Lean approach focuses on delivering value to the customer, where value is defined from the customer viewpoint. As a result, waste and non-value-added steps will be eliminated from internal process and the supply chain. Process cycle time and inventory will also be reduced because these add costs and increase response time to customer demands.
The elimination of inventory and use of just-in-time manufacture demands robust processes, where defects and breakdowns have been eliminated, or significant delays may result. Many companies will have both a Lean programme and a Problem Solving Programme within their organization.
Simplicity and the avoidance of complexity is also important in the delivery of robust systems, and a key element in Lean thinking
The five Lean principles have been defined as:
- Specifying value from the customer viewpoint
- Identifying the value stream
- Making value flow - aim for one piece flow and the elimination of inventory
- Use of Pull systems to only produce what is required
- The pursuit of perfection driving continuous improvement
