PDSA - Plan, Do, Study, Act
(Also known as PDCA)
PDSA or Plan, Do, Study, Act is the name that Dr. Deming preferred to Plan, Do, Check, Act which is an alternative often used.
PDSA is also known as the Deming Wheel in honour of Dr. Deming.
PDSA is the fundamental approach to Continuous Improvement. By definition, continuous improvement is on-going and this is achieved by continuous rotation of the Deming Wheel, or continuous recycling of the Plan, Do, Study, Act steps.
At each iteration of the cycle new improvements are identified at the Plan step, implemented at the Do step, and then checked for effectiveness in the Study step. Any failures to the plan identified in the Study step are then rectified in the Act step.
At Walker Associates we use PDSA to explain the way in which the use of the Seven Q.C. Tools and the Seven Management Tools may be integrated in the Continuous Improvement activity.
