Six Sigma

In Six Sigma the focus is on quality improvement through variation reduction. The goal is to reduce sigma (the measure of variation) such that plus or minus six sigma units may be fitted within the specification limits.

Six Sigma uses many of the same quality tools used in other approaches, and the key features of Six Sigma may be summarized as follows.

- The use of the DMAIC process (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) to provide a framework within which the quality tools are used.

- Having a senior manager to champion each improvement project and the development of a business case that justifies work on that project

- The use of statistical methods to extract more information from data, and for hypothesis testing.

Six Sigma is taught at three levels known as Black Belt, Green Belt and Yellow Belt respectively. The main difference between the three levels will be the extent of the use of statistical methods, with Black Belt involving use of the most advanced tools. Most business problems can be resolved at Green Belt or Yellow Belt level with a minority of problems requiring use of the more advanced statistical tools taught at Black Belt level.
