Total Quality (TQM)
(Also known as TQC, CWQC)
Total Quality is the name given to the overall approach in which quality principles are applied to all aspects of the business and not just manufacturing.
Quality is also defined as that which meets the customers' requirements rather than as a manufacturing specification. Thus late delivery or poor advice are as much quality issues as a product that does not meet the requirements.
The overall purpose of Total Quality is to gain competitive advantage by serving the customer better than other competitors, even if this does not maximise short-term profit. As a result it provides long-term growth and a survival strategy in a crowded marketplace.
A Total Quality approach implies the adoption of Continuous Improvement if for no other reason than that the customers' requirements and expectations will always be changing.
Other names for Total Quality are Total Quality Management, Total Quality Control, and Company Wide Quality Control.
